Frequently asked questions

Must I live in Portugal?

No. The minimum is seven days in the first year and 14 days in each subsequent two-year period.

Who may join the application?

A spouse, dependent children generally up to age 26, and qualifying dependent parents.

When may I apply for citizenship?

Under the general rules effective from 19 May 2026: after seven years for EU and Portuguese-speaking nationals and after ten years for others, subject to all conditions.
